Popular Diets > Mediterranean Diet – for a healthy heart

There are around 16 countries that surround the Mediterranean Sea. Diets in these countries vary according economy, religion, background, ethnic background, agricultural production and culture of the concerned region.

However, there is a general diet pattern of the Mediterranean places that forms the base of all these places. Breads, potatoes, nuts, beans, vegetables, and fruits are consumed by them in great quantities. Olive oil is considered to be an essential monounsaturated source of fat. Poultry, dairy products and fish are also commonly consumed in a moderate amount.

Red meat and wine is also eaten especially on special events to celebrate. Some of the people are also fond of eggs which are consumed around four times a week.

A Mediterranean diet is quite similar to dietary recommendations. Normally, the diet of Mediterranean people is rich in food that is high in fat and calories content, which is mainly due to the increased use of olive oil in their food.

Unlike saturated fats, this monosaturated fat does not raise the cholesterol level in blood. This is one of the chief reasons that are responsible for the obesity in people of the region. May be this is the reason of a decrease in heart diseases as compared to the United States.
